All of my friends and coworkers are getting FIOS in their respective counties and I’ve got a sinking feeling it’s going to be forever before it hits the city. Verizon has a good thing going by getting in to the city with it. They can release some of the stress that they have on their DSL telco connections as well as provide a good strong competitive service against Comcast. Most people who have the dish are satisfied with the service but want many of the options that Verizon can offer without the additional third party cost.
Considering how close many of the residential situations are in the city, they can provide a great number of new customers if they’d just got off their lazy rumps and get in to the city.
Now on the flip side, if Baltimore City is the hold up than consider the options. FIOS is a cheaper form of internet with greater benefits which will also provide competition and lower rates. This could help many of the lower income citizens of Baltimore City save money which would in tern provide more expendable cash on needs that they have.

I have worked in the telecommuncations industry for ten years and somewhere along the line I heard that Verizon was unable to strike a viable deal with the city for permits and beleive it or not space on the polls and sewers to install the fiber. I heard that the city wants to charge Verizon 20 for every foot of fiber they install. Thats on top of the cost and construction has priced it right out of this world. This is the same cause that kept cable from tv especially Comcast who was bigger but TCI was able to make a mysterious deal after years.

I was in a Charles Village community meeting with Councilperson Mary Pat Clark a few weeks ago and she assured the entire group that the city fully supports FIOS in the city. Verizon customer service has, reportedly, been claiming that it’s the city government that is preventing FIOS from getting into the city. This is false according to Ms. Clark; the Baltimore City Council wants FIOS for the citizens.

If you want fios I can check for you and let you know when it’s available in your area. Just email me at srich17@yahoo.com with I WANT FIOS as the subject. Its always better to do it in person with a rep as opposed to calling it in or signing up with the guys that knock on your door. No offense, but we get the construction list first and about a week to two weeks before the other guys.
