I love Roy’s. My wife and I have been there a few times, and I’ve also been there with friends as part of a joint birthday dinner. I enjoy the energy and the atmosphere. When you walk in, you’ll have the bar for drinks to your left and the bar for dinner to the front. To the right and further back is the dining area. The lighting can be a bit on the darker side compared to most restaurants. Every time we’ve been, the service has been pretty spot on; there’s been very little delay between drinks and ordering. I also love that they don’t press you to place your order either.

We started with drinks and appetizers. I had a Sam Adams and my wife had the 1988. She’s not a sweets fan and the 1988. For appetizers, we ordered the Sunrise at Haleakala which is a rolled sushi consisting of (from their menu) Tuna, Yellowtail, Salmon, Avocado, Asparagus Crispy Roll, Spicy Butter Sauce. We also ordered the Crunchy Golden Lobster Potstickers. Both were very good. I’m not a fan of fried or cooked sushi rolls, which the Sunrice at Haleakala was. It was still very good! One thing that surprised me about the roll was that it was served in 5 slices. For the two of us sharing, it meant that someone had to eat the last piece. I gave it to my wife as I had the Lobster Potstickers coming :) . The Lobster Potstickers were very good, I would go with a great but I didn’t get much of a taste of lobster in them. The sauce and the mixing were very good, if there was more of a chance for lobster then it would have been perfect. Finally, my wife had finished the appetizers with a shrimp salad.

Usually when ordering the entrĂ©e I try not to order the same thing as someone else, in an attempt to try everything. This was not the case as we were both drawn to the surf and turf. We both ordered the Grilled Petite Filet Oscar with Lump Crab and Maine Lobster Tail. This was surprising since my wife is not much of a lobster fan. I wasn’t going to contest this, if she didn’t like it then it would mean more for me.

The main course arrived and it looked amazing. I would have taken a picture, but unfortunately it was too good to let sit. The lobster was grilled and slightly pulled from the shell and the filet was tender, covered in asparagus and crab. Both the surf and the turf were perfectly placed and separated on the plate, they seemed to compliment and contradict each other perfectly. With the filet placed closest to me, that’s where I started. I asked for medium and the cut came out closer to medium rare. It didn’t matter as much though since the filet was cooked closer to medium than rare. The mix of the asparagus, crab, and filet was awesome. I truly enjoyed every bite.

The grilled lobster was tasty. It came with a butter sauce that was placed to the side, next to the mashed potatoes (AMAZING.) I’m a big fan of lobster, more so when its steamed then grilled, I won’t argue though. The lobster with the sauce was very good, they fit well together. The mashed potatoes, which was the bed for the lobster, was our favorite. It’s such a simple dish and it’s hard to screw up mashed potatoes, regardless, these mashed potatoes were glorious. They seemed to be mixed with green onions and I could almost taste a bit of whole peas. It was too late to check by the time I realized since there was barely any left.

We finished dinner with the Molten Hot Chocolate SoufflĂ©. It’s hard to believe that we still had room after all that food but with the portion sizes being perfect, it allowed us to enjoy all the different parts of the menu. A few of the reviews I’ve seen have mentioned price as a point of contention about Roy’s. We paid about $75 a person there with drinks and food. I consider that a fair price considering the quality and specialty of the food and even though it may seem steep, it’s worth it.
